Proud Moment for Powers

Claude Powers must have been on cloud nine. He must have felt like “Archie” Manning on Saturday… Archie-- the proud father of both Payton Manning, and Eli Manning-- starting quarterbacks for the Indianapolis Colts, and the New York Giants (both all stars).

Powers is the proud breeder of both Southern Rocketop, and Southern Maebelle-- super star Illinois bred trotters for trainer Robert Taylor.

Manning has been quoted as saying “it’s a great feeling and a proud moment when you see one of your kids do well, but when you see two doing great it’s amazing and it makes you feel really proud.”   In harness racing it’s no different as horses are horsemen kids, so when two of their horses do well it’s also a great feeling, and a proud moment…. especially if their related like Rocketop and Maebelle are.

The first and second proud moment for Claude Powers came... when Southern Rocketop was awarded-- three year old trotter of the year and Illinois Horse of the year awards--when they were given out this Saturday to Prairie State Standardbreds at the USTA district five Awards Banquet.

In 2009, we have watched Southern Rocketop race all over North America …. racing in Canada and finishing third to World Champion Muscle Hill in the Canadian Trotting Classic. Racing at Du Quoin in the World Trotting Derby he finished a very good second; beaten only a length (the closes a Illinois bred has finish in the World Trotting Derby), again by World Champion Muscle Hill.

Victories in 2009 came in the State Championship at Springfield, the Cardinal Stakes, overnight stakes against state breds at Balmoral Park, against open company he was victorious in The Galt Stakes at Maywood Park, an elimination of the Canadian Trotting Classic, and a stake at Indiana Downs in Shelbyville, Indiana.

Southern Rocketop was owned by Powers Farm LLC throughout most of his races this year. But was sold in October for $300.000 to Tor Birger Krageboen of Norway.  Brian Carpenter and Dave Magee handled the driving duties in 2009 for the team of Powers and Taylor.

So it definitely wasn’t a shock to anybody to see Southern Rocketop win those awards.

A more difficult, but much appreciated proud moment came when Southern Maebelle received the Two Year Old Trotting Filly of the Year Award. The half sister to Southern Rocketop had a good year, but not a knockout year like her older brother.  Fillies like Fox Valley Luxury, Fox Valley Brenna, and a couple others also had good seasons. So the end of the year award was a little more difficult to win from voters for the Robert Taylor trainee. A victory at Du Quoin in the Shawnee, a win in the Sarah Meyers, and a third place finish in the American National at Balmoral Park helped Southern Maebelle takes the honors for 2009. Southern Maebelle was driven mostly by Tyler Buter for his connections.

The Fourth and final  proud moment of the day came when Summer In The City was named Trotting Broodmare of the year. The Donerail mare is the mother of both of Claude Powers champion’s (Southern Rocketop and Southern Maebelle).

She has some big shoes to fill; but hopefully, and with a little luck  Southern Maebelle may give the Tennessee man some more Proud Moments.
