Records Fall At Charleston In Illinois Stallion Stakes

By J.C. Trevino for

Records are made to be broken, however it just seems that every time we look up a fresh record is being recorded. And Wednesday July 28 at Charleston, Illinois was no different as two records were broken, one a world record and the other one a Illinois County fair record.

The first of two broken records came right off the  bat in the first race when 95 year old Albion Illinois resident Leo Burns defeated three rivals to break his own record as the oldest driver to ever win a harness race--when he piloted Winsome Wyoming to a 2:01 victory.  Mr. Burns owns the six year old Wilson Wyoming mare.

The second record was accomplished in race 5 when Randall Finn guided home the Pamela Coleman trained Powerful Charger to a sixteen length victory in 2:01. 4/5, setting the fastest trotting mile ever on a half mile racetrack by a two year old trotting gelding at a Illinois county fair. Jerry Graham, Mystical Makers Farms, and the trainer own the Powerful Emotion gelding.

Although no more records were wrecked throughout the evening there were plenty of strong and deceive winners through out the night.

In the third heat of the evening locally owned and trained two year old filly Make It Rain did her Viviani rain dance as she strutted her stuff to a seventeen length victory. Driver Stephan Halford II saluted the crowd as he crossed the finish line first with the Sue Phillips, Jerald & Donna Viviani, and the Phillips Standardbreds two year old Armbro American filly in 2:07.4/5.

In race seven trainer / driver Tom Simmons guided Cuzimademymindup to a front end achievement in 2:03. 2/5 to record her fourth lifetime win in five career starts.  The two year old Cole Muffler filly is owned by James Cravens, Chris Cravens, and Luke Gaule all of Illinois.

The recent private acquisition TJ’s Rocky turned out to be a good purchase for trainer David McCaffrey and owner Mike Polansky as the freshman Park Place gelding was masterfully handled by Mike Cox to a a
half a length victory in 1:59 recording the fastest heat of the night, and
keeping his record in tact, now3 for 3 lifetime with a lifetime mark of 1:55. 4/5 over Maywood Park strip..
